Cavalier started out in the 1950s as an excellent men's magazine with some of the better painted covers and overall high production standards. In the 1960s it switched over to upscale Girlie magazine format. In the late 1960s and early 1970s it carved out a niche as one of the best hipster magazines by featuring well written articles on the counter-culture upheaval taking place in that era.
