Cavalier started out in the 1950s as a better than average type of men's magazine. In the 1960s it switched over to upscale Girlie magazine format. It carved out a niche as one of the best hipster magazines of the 1960s by featuring well written articles on the counter-culture upheaval taking place in that era.
