After Hours
V.1 #3 1957
Grading Definitions
$30.00
Jay Publishing Co. in Philidelphia, PA
After Hours only lasted 4 issues. It was published by James Warren who experimented with girlie magazines briefly before figuring out he could make more money by hiring monster movie fanboy Forrest J. Ackerman to be the editor of the first American monster movie fan magazine, Famous Monsters Of Filmland. Warren later added Screen Thrills Illustrated, Spaceman Monster World, Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella to his magazine line. The last issue of After Hours, #4, contains several articles by Forrest Ackerman about old timey monster movies. I suppose this caught the attention of Warren and helped persuade him to switch from publishing photos of naked women over to movie monsters. Because After Hours #4 predates Famous Monsters Of Filmland #1, it is considered a precursor or prototype of Famous Monsters and is highly sought after by monster magazine collectors.
"After Hours With Joan Arnold" 8 b&w photos. Joan was a Playboy Playmate for May 1954.
"Las Vegas Folio" most of the rest of this magazine is devoted to photos and articles about Las Vegas, Nevada. Includes 1 b&w photo each of Marlene Dietrich in her see through blouse, Jerry Lewis performing with Georgine Darcy, Frankie Laine, Zsa Zsa Gabor with Geroge Burns and Jack Benny.
"Gina, Sophia And Company" Sophia Loren full page b&w photo laying in a stack of hay wearing a hat + 1 more b&w photo. Gina Lollobrgida 2 b&w photos. Gianna Maria Canale 2 photos. Marisa Rossi 2 b&w photos.
Full page ad to become a After Hours charter subscriber for $4.50 for 12 issues. Since this magazine only lasted 1 more issue, I hope the folks who signed up got a refund. Or maybe Mr. Warren converted their $4.50 over to a subscription for Famous Monsters Of Filmland.
